Continuing our talk on hair growth, one must understand that the hair goes through growth cycles and stages. On an average the hair grows 1/4 to 1/2 inch per month, all this happens from a hair follicle that is situated about 4 millimeters below the surface of the scalp. It's important to know that all of us may experience this on different levels due to various factors. (i.e.- personal hair care practices, age, genetics, diet, ect..) All hair goes through phrases throughout life: First is the growing phase (anagen). In this phase hair grows on an average 4-7 years, however, as we get older this phase will slow down and begin to shorten. Second is the resting phase (catagen). In this phase hair takes a rest and prepares to shed. This phase from what I have learned can last any where from 4 weeks to as long as 4 months. According to doctors our hair follicles during this stage begin to loose its color (melanin) as well.
Lastly we have the shedding phase (telogen). It's in this phase where the hair will shed either due to your styling routine or shed on its own. This stage can last as long as 4 months.
In the textured hair community, we are so misguided and miseducated on the real facts of hair care. Hopefully some of what I have shared with you today will help aid in you understanding why a solid hair care regimen is important, as well as help you to examine closely the how and why of the products you use on your hair.
