As a stylist that specialize in textured hair care, I see many clients that deal with retaining moisture. There are so many product lines that will dupe you into thinking they have the "RIGHT" fix to all your dry hair problems. Before you fall for the trap, be sure you understand what is happening with your hair strands.
Today's installment of GOOD HAIR talk is on POROSITY.
Porosity refers to how well your hair is able to absorb and hold moisture. It is affected by the flexible outer hair layer that we call the cuticle. The cuticle ladies is what determines how easily moisture and oils pass in and out of your hair. What I've learned is that for most people this is genetic, but it CAN be affected by external factors as well. ( heat and or chemicals) As I stated above knowing your hair porosity level can help keep your tresses well moisturized, strong, shiny and supple.
Low Porosity is when the hair is resistant and has multiple tightly packed cuticle layers. This hair is very dry and can become very brittle.
High Porosity is when the hair has fewer layers within the cuticle. The hair here has been lifted through chemical or mechanical processes. Don't get it twisted, this hair can absorb moisture, yet can ALSO loose it quickly. Leaving this hair exposed could lead to some serious damage.
