3A, 4B, 4C, Whet?!

March 29, 2017

I remember when I first decided to return to  natural and how  Youtube and many blogs had consume so much of my life! Returning to natural can be a scary thing, especially when you don't feel like you know what you're doing. I spent so much money on hair care products trying to achieve the "perfect" twist out, braid out, and  Bantu knots.  I remember trying to identify my "curl pattern" in efforts of my hair turning out like my favorite internet curly girl. That never worked.

Little did I know, this whole idea of a numbered curl pattern to help you choose the right products for your hair didn't exist. It was a marketing tool made up to get the consumer to purchase a certain product line for their hair.

You see,  there are  3 categories for hair types;  but those who are multiethnic ,  could possibly have all three on one head.

They are:

FINE - is 45 to 60 microns in width (1 micron equals 1/25,000 of an inch)

MEDIUM- is 61 TO 90 microns

COARSE - is 91 to 125 and up microns

From these 3 types you can have - straight, wavy, curly or kinky/super curly. If you were to take a hair and cut it in a cross section you'd see that:

straight hair looks round

wavy hair looks oval

curly hair looks almost flat

kinky/super curly looks flat

All these shapes come from the hair follicle, so straight hair has a round follicle where  as curly hair has a oval follicle. Don't sound like math to me.

So, the next time someone ask you what's your curl type, you just nicely tell them:

"I don't do Algebra homie, my hair is just curly"!
